MORGANTOWN - Sept. 19 - Morgantown High's boys coach, Thomas Moore, will be introducing Soft Lacrosse to the North Central West Virginia area. Soft Lacrosse is a 5-week program for boys and girls Kindergarten through 3rd grade.
This program was created by Coach Bob Turco in New Jersey, and has produced multiple international, professional and collegiate players. This program will consist of 20 minutes of instructional time, and 30 minutes of playing a game. Although the players will be required to wear the Soft Lacrosse protective equipment for safety concerns (helmet and gloves), this will be non-contact and will focus on basic skills and fun!
There will be a one-time equipment charge of $98 which will include a helmet, gloves, a stick and a membership to U.S. Lacrosse (which costs $50 alone) and can be purchased directly on www.softlacrosse.com This equipment will be for the player to keep, and will hopefully be coming back to all of the sessions! Each 5-week session will cost $95 and all registration is also located on www.softlacrosse.com. The website is scheduled to be launched at some point later today.
"I really hope that this program will take off," said Coach Moore. "This can be something the local lacrosse community can look forward to year after year."

It is a free event hosted by the WJU men's lacrosse program and includes a WJU Varsity scrimmage, a pot luck BBQ & Picnic, a Fastest Shot Contest for Local Players, and a FREE clinic and 7v7 games for youth & HS Players. This event is aimed at supporting the growth of lacrosse in the Wheeling area while building friendships between the WJU program and local lacrosse players and their families.

WHEELING COMMUNITY LACROSSE DAY SCHEDULE
Saturday, October 11, at Emily LaRosa Field at Wheeling Jesuit University

2:00 PM - BBQ & Picnic during the WJU Lacrosse Scrimmage. Who has the fastest shot in Wheeling? We will have a radar gun for a Youth & HS Fastest Shot Contest at halftime.

4:00 PM - Free Lacrosse Clinic run by WJU Lacrosse, followed by organized 7v7 games.
We will break into 3 groups:
1. Introductory (never played before, so you can bring an inexperienced friend and we will lend them a stick).
2. Middle School (If possible we will break into 5/6 & 7/8 grade groups).
3. High School. The event is scheduled to end at 5:30, but we will stay and coach the boys as long as they want to stay on the field.

A few additional notes from Coach Dugan:

*Families & friends are all invited and encouraged to attend all activities, scrimmage, BBQ, clinic etc. We will have lots of extra sticks to lend to your friends, this event could be a great chance to introduce a friend to lacrosse.

*Our team at WJU is playing at a very high level right now, this will be a VERY fun game to watch and will be very high quality lacrosse. Watching this scrimmage will be a great way for youth & HS lacrosse players to learn. It is also a great opportunity to bring a friend and get them hooked on lacrosse!

*Participants in the free clinic and 7v7 games will need to complete a waiver of liability (This will be emailed out after you sign up online).

*Per NCAA rules, the clinic is open to any and all boys in High School and Middle School.

*If we get enough players signed up from the local high schools we will let them play with their teams in the 7 v 7 games during the second half of the clinic.

*Equipment needs for the clinics: Introductory Clinic (No Equipment, we will even have extra sticks), Middle School & High School (Full Equipment).

*Jesuit Lacrosse gear will be on sale

*During the clinic Coach Dugan is going to demonstrate a simple drill that lacrosse Moms or Dads can do with their son even if they have no lacrosse experience.

*We will email all registered families prior to the BBQ & Picnic and assign a few items (Chips, Drinks, Condiments etc.) to ensure we have enough food for the group. We will provide and organize many key items, but this is a potluck BBQ, but we will have a huge grill, grill master, tables, chairs and tents set up adjacent to the field.

WHEELING - Oct. 30 - WJU Set to Welcome 40 Lacrosse Teams, Pro Franchise to Campus

WJU head men's lacrosse coach, Kevin Dugan, has a lot to be happy about right now. His program is on the heels of one of the best seasons in program history, and just wrapped up a highly productive fall campaign that saw several talented newcomers join the program. However, what has Dugan excited this week is the professional lacrosse franchise (The Ohio Machine of Major League Lacrosse) and 40 youth / high school teams that will be making their way to campus this Sunday, November 2, for the WJU Big Shot 7v7 lacrosse tournament.

"This Sunday's event is going to be a great day for Wheeling Jesuit and for the game lacrosse in this region of the country," said Dugan. "Everyone on campus has been working hard to make sure we are prepared to welcome this big group of visitors to campus."

The University is expecting well over 1,500 visitors for the lacrosse tournament that will played on Emily LaRosa Field, McDonough Field and the newly renovated Bishop Schmitt turf field. Games are set to begin at 8:30 AM on Sunday and will run until 4:00 PM.

In addition to welcoming all the youth and high school programs, WJU will also play host to the Ohio Machine. The Machine, based in Columbus, Ohio, are the only Major League Lacrosse franchise is this region and are assisting in the management and organization of the event. The Machine are also seeking to develop and promote the game of lacrosse and their franchise to lacrosse enthusiasts here in West Virginia.

"We are excited to work with WJU to make this a great event and hope it serves to help fuel the continued growth of lacrosse in West Virginia," commented Bear Davis, head coach and Vice President of the Ohio Machine.

For Dugan this event is just the start of his vision to run year round events that put Wheeling Jesuit at the center of the growing enthusiasm for lacrosse here in the Mountain State. Members of the WJU team will be volunteering all day to assist with event management.

Dugan went on to comment about his teams service efforts, which are centered around introducing the game of lacrosse to youth in the Wheeling community, "Every Sunday this past month our team was volunteering at youth lacrosse clinics at the YMCA," he said. "Our guys have a passion for coaching, serving and growing the game. That is part of the reason they came to Wheeling Jesuit. They want to be part of a program that our school and the West Virginia lacrosse community can be proud of."

Lacrosse is currently the fastest growing team sport in the country, and is starting to catch on in West Virginia. There are over twenty high school programs in the state now, and new youth teams are sprouting up every year.

What is Box Lacrosse and why does it improve your field lacrosse game:

Box Lacrosse is different from playing indoor field lacrosse.
· 5 on 5 play plus a padded goalie
· Suggested 15 players per team
· 4x4 goals (regular field goal is 6 x 6)
· More flowing game
· No one "stays back"
· No long poles
· Goalies wear big pads or at least additional pads

Advantages of box lacrosse over indoor field lacrosse.
· Smaller goals force players to get closer to net rather than relying on outside shots
· Not having defenders and attack stay back get you in better shape and make more well rounded players learning both offensive and defensive skills
· Long poles learn to use feet and body to play defense and don't rely solely on stick checks
· Goalies learn to use their body to make more saves
· Learn the use of stick fakes and quick precision passing

Common Questions
My son plays goalie. Do I need to buy him box pads?

No. FSHS Lacrosse will be purchasing additional chest protector and leggings. Goalies can choose to wear their own gear, but additional padding is recommended. Teams are responsible for providing their own goalie

Who will be my coach?
Teams will have approved US Lacrosse member coach signed up.
